Treasurer's account of the Union Fire Society for January 9, 1815. Robert Rantoul was the Treasurer at the time and a committe of three approved the account. The committe (listed on the reverse side of the document) consisted of John B. Allen and 2 other men whose names are illegible. The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the Society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the Society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. |
