Orders to Nicholas Thorndike that inform him Brown & Thorndike are convinced that he cannot get a cargo of grain from Virginia that will afford them a prospect of a freight to Europe. They suggest to offer his current vessel up for sale and if he can get 15,000 dollars or more for it, to sell it and to return home with the cash. If he cannot sell his ship but obtain a freight to Europe that will leave 170 liver remitted to London, he will take one, taking into consideration that the port fees in Spain or Portugal or at a free port in France are much less than in England or Ireland. If he obtains a freight after having discharged it he will proceed to the Isle of May and load salt unless he discharges at Lisbon then he will take salt and 70 boxes of lemmons and proceed home. If he cannot succeed in the task pointed out but can obtain a freight to other parts of the world he can accept one. But if he cannot obtain any freight, he will return home. |
