Treasurer's Account of the Union Fire Society. Robert Rantoul was the Treasurer and a committee of three [(?) Stephens, William Endicott, and Alpheus Davis] deemed the account correct. Others named in the account as having paid cash into the Society were Richard Pedrick, R. & J. Pickett, Samuel Endicott, and Lydia Leech. The account also specifies deposits made to the Five Cent Institution for Savings in Salem, Salem Savings Bank, and schedules of property belonging to the Society (18 shares in the Beverly Bank). The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. Annual meetings were held in January and there was a constitution by which society members were to abide. |
