Treasurer's account of the Union Fire Society. Robert Rantoul was the Treasurer at the time. A committe of three (Charles Stephens, Henry Larcom and Augustus Torrey) approved the account. The account documents money taken in and paid out, deposits, interest, dividends and balances of the society. Named within the account are Robert Berry, Sephens Baker, George Reynolds, John Pickett, and Olphert Tittle. Banks dealt with by the Society included the Beverly Bank and the Savings Bank in Salem. The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the Society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the Society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. Annual meetings were held in January and there was a constitution by which members of the society abided. |
