1782 receipt for seaman's wages to Captain Robert Rantoul, Master of the Brig Defence. Robert Rantoul was born in Scotland 1753, emigrated to America in 1769, and married Mary Preston in Salem in 1774. He died in 1783 while aboard the "Iris" which was lost on a voyage from the York River to Nantes. The "Defence" was owned by William Gray, Benjamin West, Theodore Lyman and others.
