Scope & Content |
1848 - 1856 Log of the Bark "Orion" and the Ship "Diana" Captain Octavius Howe. The log has been assigned 4 numbers - see notes. This section is a voyage of the Diana out of Boston to New Orleans - the voyage actually begins on 5 March 1848 but the section begins on March 14. On April 22, 1848 Captain reported that damage to the vessel caused 18 inches of water in the ship and they began pumping. Hoisted a signal to steamboats for a tow, but the weather was bad and none saw. Eventually they were towed onto mud to view the damage was worse than believed. The men refused to do the work required at first and one man was confined in irons, the Captain read the shipping articles and finally everyone went to work to lighten the load and do repairs. On May 4th 1849, after other voyages, Captain Howe wrote that "Captain Beckett took command of the ship and sailed for New Orleans and I remained at home ruralizing." This BHS number, 31634, concludes on Feb 4th 1850. See 31635 for more from this log. |
