Treasurer's Account of the Union Fire Society, dated January 12, 1818. Robert Rantoul was the Treasurer at the time. Account mentions several individuals including Thomas Stephens and Robert G. Bennett. Also mentioned within the account are the committee of three that examined and approved it including Isaac Flagg, Nathaniel Goodwin and a third, illegible name. The account includes stocks belonging to the Society, interest and dividends earned, and deposits made. The Beverly Bank and the Beverly Marine Insurance Company are also mentioned. The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. Annual meetings were held in January and there was a constitution by which society members were to abide. |
