17th roster ("Assessment") of the Union Fire Society including members' names and money owed. Members listed are John Dyson, Robert Porter, Robert Rantoul, Nathaniel Goodwin, John Page, Jr., Robert Haskell, Henry Thorndike, William Leach, Samuel Goodridge, Thomas Woodberry (crossed out), Thomas Woodberry, Jr. (crossed out), , Mark Knowlton, John B. Allen, Thomas Davis, Timothy Wyer, Isaac Flagg, Peter Woodberry, Jr., James Worsley, John Burley, Rufus Nourse, Benjamin Beckford, Jonathan H. Lovett, Elisha Whitney, Charles Dennis, Francis Lamson, Jr. The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the Society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the Society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. Annual meetings were held in January and there was a constitution by which members of the society abided. |
