Receipt of the Union Fire Society which paid Abraham Bazin of Boston, MA $15 for a variety of goods and services including bed keys. On the back of the receipt are the names Philip Wentworth and James Worsley. James Worsley was a member of the Union Fire Society. The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the Society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the Society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. Annual meetings were held in January and there was a constitution by which members of the society abided. |
