In the letter to his family Barker is in California, commenting how beautiful it is, although the weather has been very rainy. He says that he recieved a letter from them explaining that there was a sickness going around the family's hometown of Jericho, VT. He says that where he is there is an outbreak of smallpox. He begins talking about California saying how the winter there is nothing like winter in Vermont. He then writes a letter to his brother Fayette about how he wishes he was with him. Barker talks about having gone fishing, and the wildlife. He says how grizzly bears are as prevelent there as foxes are back in Vermont. He then writes to his sister, talking about growing food, and being a bachelor. |
