Receipt of the Union Fire Society. $2.50 (?) was paid on January 14, 1858 to the "Estate of Wm Barr" for "mending fire bucket of Meacoms." Pay was received by Mary F. Barr, presumably William Barr's widow. On the reverse of the document is written "I will pay the within...for Robert Rantoul." Robert Rantoul had been the Treasurer of the Union Fire Society but had died. Notation is not signed. The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. Annual meetings were held in January and there was a constitution by which society members were to abide. |
