| Scope & Content | Roster ("Assessment") of the Union Fire Society from July 9, 1810.  There were 23 members at the time.  They were John Dyson, Robert Rantoul, Robert Haskell, Nathaniel Goodwin, John Page, Jr., Robert Porter, Henry Thorndike, William Leach, Samuel Goodridge, Mark Knowlton, John B. Allen, Thomas Davis, Timothy Wyer, Isaac Flagg, James Worsley, Peter Woodberry, Jr., John Burley, Rufus Nourse, Benjamin Beckford, Jonahtan H. Lovett, Elisha Whitney, Charles Dennis, and Francis Lamson.  Along with the roster are lists of names of members who owe the society money.  Thomas Davis is named as the treasurer. The Union Fire Society was founded in 1804. Members of the Society were to assist each other in the event of a fire at their home or business. Each was given 2 leather water buckets, a large cloth bag with which to retrieve possessions, and a bed key. Additionally, the Society was to assist those members who had suffered losses due to fire. Annual meetings were held in January and there was a constitution by which members of the society abided. |
