A clipping of a newspaper article cover GAR post 89's support of the volunteers of Company E of the U.S.V. It reflects that post 89 donated $50 "for the benefit of the members of Co. E." The verso of the clipping lists items for sale, such as building materials and houses. The newspaper clipping is undated, though it was found interleaved in a scrapbook containing GAR headquarters general orders from the time period of 09/14/1881 to 12/27/1883. Its placement in the book did not have any apparent significance. The clipping is housed in Folder 7. Formed in 1866, the GAR was a fraternal organization comprised of Civil War veterans who had served in the Union army or navy. Beverly, Massachusetts' GAR Post 89, most recently located at 8 Dane Street, housed members from Beverly, Salem, Hamilton, and other local municipalities. |
