Orders from Brown & Thorndike to Nicholas Thorndike to take a load of flour in New York and to proceed to St. Marks in Hispaniola, where he will there get the best information of the markets for furnishing with coffee and cotton. Also telling him that it might be wise to visit the places where produce can be had the cheapest before buying the homeward cargo. If coffee is taken make sure to have it in bags or carks properly marked. Allowence will be made in loss or gain in weight leakage cost of carks. Make sure to take vouchers at New York to make it clear he has American cargo, and do not take passengers if they are at war, and take bills of everything purchased. Also if he is to be admitted to Havanna with cargo of flour then go directly there and sell or lay out money. |
