Summary |
In addition to Descendants of Philip McIntire Revised Edition, Robert H. McIntire also created a genealogy of ancestors with his wife Helen A. McIntire. The original 1941 book (revised in 1982) traced the descendants of the first McIntire in America, Philip McIntire. In this 1980 work, he begins with his children and traces their ancestors as far back he can. The book is divided into three parts. Part I focuses on his own ancestors. Part II focuses on Helen's ancestors. Part III focuses on the collateral ancestors of his daughter-in-law and three sons-in-law. Parts I and II are also further divided into four sections: ancestors of his and Helen's paternal grandfather, paternal grandmother, maternal grandfather, and maternal grandmother. A key of abbreviations is included in the preliminaries on page v and the work's index begins on page 253. Illustrations are included throughout, including the original Scottish McIntyre crest and photographs of several family members. Several of McIntire's ancestors were participants in significant events in early American history. George Denison was a military captain who lived in the Pequot settlement on the west bank of the Thames in what is now New London, Connecticut. He built a fort in Stonington, Connecticut and commanded volunteers in the crucial Great Swamp Fight of King Philip's War on December 19, 1675. Denison's forces and their Pequot allies laid siege to the main Narragansett fort, which was on an island surrounded by acres of swamp. It was stormy and bitterly cold that night, but after a long march and four hours of fierce fighting the colonists took the heavily fortified settlement and killed 700 Native Americans, including civilians. 80 volunteers died and more than 100 were injured. Chief Canonchet was captured and executed for refusing make peace with the settlers. After that blow, the Narragansett tribe struggled to recover. Their Wampanoag allies were defeated soon after. Their chief, King Philip or Metacomet, was killed a few months later, which essentially ended the war in English victory. For his contribution to this war, George Denison was compared to fighters Miles Standish and John Mason in terms of their colonial military successes against Native Americans. Phebe Chandler, the daughter of William and Bridget (Henchman) Chandler, was an accuser during the witch trial of Martha Carryer, wife of Thomas Carryer on August 2, 1692 in Andover, Massachusetts. Chandler recounted Carryer's voice over her head telling her that she would be poisoned in two or three days, the painful swelling of her right hand and face, great pain in her breast, and seized legs that nearly prevented her from moving altogether. Her mother, Bridget, corroborated her Phebe's story. Cotton Mather accused Martha Carryer of causing these injuries because the Devil promised to make her the Queen of Hell. Carryer was condemned and hanged on August 19, 1692. |
