Summary |
Part I of the Descendants of Austin and Alice Kilham contains the direct line descendants of Austin and Alice. In addition, it contains photographs of people and houses, important biographical dates, and information and stories about the direct line descendants it covers. Related families named Betts, Bridge, Chadwick, Chilton, Coffin, Gookin, McMerrick, and Winslow are also included in Part I. Part II contains mainly charts of all the descendants of Alice and Austin Kilham who are not direct line descendants. There are forty seven charts total with family trees including names, births, marriages, and deaths. The whole text of Part II is also in the Part I book. Part II includes short biographies of two family members and a photograph of the first. Horace Wilson Killam (1845-1937) continued the genealogical work of his father Joseph Whitney Killam (1808-1884) without many reference books. He spent long hours in the New England Historic and Genealogical Society at Boston Public Library. He also corresponded with interested people to learn more about his family's history and enjoyed attending family reunions for historical discussions. Killam never owned a car or carriage, but still managed to walk many miles looking for his ancestors in graveyards. His granddaughters later typed his research for preservation. Elias Cornelius Killam (1825-1902) was the ancestor of most of the Killams in the midwest. He was born in Boxford, Massachusetts but moved to Wisconsin due to the illness of his wife's father. Susan M. Hitchcock needed to help care for her siblings because her mother had died. Elias was a farmer, teacher, and soldier who served in the 43rd Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. He was also a devout Christian who regularly honored fallen military graves with flowers at White Oak Cemetery in Missouri, where he moved to avoid harsh Wisconsin winters. He died on the way home from one of many family gatherings and was buried there in 1902. |
