Description |
This is a 3/4 front fireman's side view of Eastern Railroad #3 "Ossipee" on a trestle, circa mid-1870's. This locomotive was built by Souther of Boston, Massachusetts in 1853. The cylinders measured 13x20. This is ex Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway "Carroll." When the Boston & Maine Railroad leased the Eastern in 1883 it became #103 "Wenham." This locomotive was scrapped by the B&M in 1895. As a side note, on June 30, 1871, #3 "Ossipee, " while pulling a Salem-Marblehead Branch train from Marblehead, derailed a mile east of Forest River Station. This photo came from the Boston & Maine Railroad's Marketing Department and was complied by Benjamin Thomas. One image is in sepia tone, the second and third photo is grayscale, though the third image is of the highest quality. The Walker Transportation Collection has a copy negative (#ERL-35-67 and is located in the Vault), though these digital copies are of better quality. |
