Description |
Black and white photograph showing Central Vermont boxcar #60769 and flanger #4236 at South Londonderry, VT in 1936. Note the combine to the right. The West River Railway was originally the 3 foot narrow gauge Brattleboro & Whitehall Railroad. It was absorbed by the Central Vermont Railroad and was converted to standard gauge on July 30, 1905. The line was sold by the Central Vermont in 1930 to local residents. The line was leased to James Gailey Ashley in 1933 for $1500 in the spring of 1933. The bank foreclosed, and the line was scrapped in 1936. The line was 36 miles long. It had 295 curves, and less than half that many straight sections. The line ran between South Londonderry, VT and Brattleboro, VT. |
