Description |
This is a 3/4 front engineer's view of Eastern Railroad's #57 "Chocorua," a 4-4-0 in circa 1875. This locomotive was built by the Eastern Railroad in 1871. The cylinders measured 14x22. The #57 was renumbered to 157 and renamed the "North Wind" when the Boston & Maine Railroad leased the Eastern in 1883. Number #57 was scrapped by the B&M in 1890. This photograph of the "Chocorua" was taken at York Beach, Maine. Note how the name Eastern is seen on the tender. At about 1880, the Eastern gave up naming their locomotives. This photo came from the Boston & Maine Railroad's Marketing Department and was complied by Benjamin Thomas. One image is in sepia tone and the second photo is grayscale. The Walker Transportation Collection has a copy negative (#ERL-31-57 and is located in the Vault). |
