Description |
This is an engineer's side view of Eastern Railroad third #5 "Penobscot," a 4-4-0, circa 1890. This locomotive was built by the Rhode Island Locomotive Works on January 27, 1881. Number 5 was built 18x24 cylinders, but were rebuilt with them measuring 17x24. Eastern #5 was renumbered as Boston & Maine #105 "Penobscot" when the B&M leased the Eastern in 1883. When the Boston & Maine renumbered their locomotives in 1911, #5 was scheduled to then be renumbered again to #620, but was most likely scrapped in either April or May of 1911 before that new number was placed on the locomotive. This photo was taken in East Somerville, Massachusetts. This photo came from the Boston & Maine Railroad's Marketing Department and was complied by Benjamin Thomas. One image is in sepia tone, the second and third photo is grayscale, though the third image is of the highest quality. |
