Black and white photograph showing West River Railroad 2-6-0 #4 "H.H. Paine" at South Londonderry, VT in 1936. #4 was built by the Manchester Locomotive Works in Manchester, NH in 1896 for the Bangor and Aroostock railroad. She was purchased by the Woodstock Railway in 1929 second hand for $6,100. When the Woodstock Railroad was abandoned on April 15, 1929, the locomotive was put up for sale. It was purchased by the West River Railroad, but during the trial run she was proved too heavy for their poor track. She was cut up in 1936 when the West River Railroad was foreclosed. The West River Railway was originally the 3 foot narrow gauge Brattleboro & Whitehall Railroad. It was absorbed by the Central Vermont Railroad and was converted to standard gauge on July 30, 1905. The line was sold by the Central Vermont in 1930 to local residents. The line was leased to James Gailey Ashley in 1933 for $1500 in the spring of 1933. The bank foreclosed, and the line was scrapped in 1936. The line was 36 miles long. It had 295 curves, and less than half that many straight sections. The line ran between South Londonderry, VT and Brattleboro, VT. |
