This black and white photograph of Boston & Maine Railroad's #1552, a ElectroMotive Division of General Motors (EMD) BL2, is a 3/4 front fireman's side view. The paint scheme is maroon with solid yellow/gold strips. In red lettering, Boston and Maine is seen in the thick yellow strip on the side of the locomotive. Above the word Boston is the number of the locomotive, 1552, in yellow. On the front of the locomotive is the B&M's "Minute Man" herald with 1552 numbered above that with reflectors. The Boston & Maine Railroad used the EMD BL2 for intercity passenger trains, but when the Budd RDC cars came on the property, the BL2 was relegated to commuter and freight service. Because they were not multiple unit locomotives (MU locomotives are capable of being run with multiple units) their usefulness on the B&M was short-lived. This is an official EMD photo and was taken in LaGrange, Illinois sometime in September of 1948. This is a brand new locomotive and the photograph was taken shortly before delivery to the Boston & Maine Railroad. All of the Boston & Maine's EMD BL2s, #1550-1553, were traded in on EMD GP18s #1770 to #1175. |
