Description |
This is a 3/4 front fireman's side view of Eastern Railroad #4 "Ipswich," a 4-4-0, circa 1883. This locomotive was built by the Rhode Island Works in 1882. The cylinders measured 17x24. When the Boston & Maine Railroad leased the Eastern in 1883, it was renumbered to 104 and was called the Ipswich. This is the second Eastern RR #4. The first #4 was originally built in East Boston, Massachusetts in 1860 and was scrapped by the Eastern in 1881. The "Ipswich" was later rebuilt and renumbered to 696 by the B&M. This photo came from the Boston & Maine Railroad's Marketing Department and was complied by Benjamin Thomas. One image is in sepia tone, the second and third photo is grayscale, though the third image is of the highest quality. |
