A glossy black and white photograph of two women working with equipment in the laboratory at Metcom of Salem. Bomac Laboratories was founded in 1947 as a professional laboratory organized for the purpose of research and development in the field of microwave tubes. The company was manufacturing over 750 different types of tubes within a decade. Bomac had the most complete line of ATR's, TR's and Pre-TR's manufactured in this country and also manufactured silicon diodes, magnetrons, klystrons and reference cavities. Divorced from this type of tube, the company also manufactured many microwave devices and custom testing equipment. Bomac later merged with Varian thus bringing together two of the world's largest producers of microwave specialties. When Bomac merged with Varian Associates in 1959, six key employees were piqued because they got less than 1% of the swapped stock; in April they stalked off with four others to form Metcom (Microwave Electronic Tube Co.) and compete with their former employer. Within nine days they had a plant in Salem, Mass., financing, firm contracts and a production schedule calling for June deliveries of microwave tubes. |
