Description |
Black and White information card written by the late Laurence Breed Walker telling the lineage and specifications of Suncook Valley Railroad diesel #2. Diesel #2 was originally built as #2 for E. I. DuPont de Nemours service at Chickasaw Ordinance Depot (U.S. Army). It was transferred to Fort Benning, GA and renumbered U.S. Army #7329. It was sold to Greenville Manufacturing Company in Greenville, OH in 1949. It was later resold to the Suncook Valley in 1949. It was repaired and repainted in the Concord, NH shops and arrived on Suncook Valley Railroad property on April 22, 1949. The following day, it replaced 2-6-0 #1 in regular service. The #1 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works on March 21, 1927 with a construction # of 59887. It had 18" x 24" cylinders and 180 P.S.I. of boiler pressure. Its total weight was 111,400 lbs, and had 23,000 lbs of tractive force. Its tender could hold 6 tons of coal and 3,000 gallons of water. It was retired April 22, 1949, and sold to Max Cohen & Sons in 1950. It was scrapped June 19, 1950. The #2 was built by General Electric in August, 1940 with Construction #12934. It weighed 43 tons and had 300 H.P. The #2 lacked sufficient power and was replaced in 1951 by a brand new 380 H.P. General Electric 44 Tonner, #3. The #3 had construction #31114, and was bought brand new by the Suncook Valley Railroad. It was built on July 19, 1951. It was transfered to Sanford & Eastern Railroad #18 in 1953 after the Suncook Valley was abandoned. It became Greenville & Northern #78 in 1959 and later Claremont and Concord #17 in May, 1961. It was sold to George Silcott #17 in 1976, then resold to Donahue Company of Clermont, PQ, Canada in 1976 with no road number. |
