Description |
Framed exhibit of cotton spun by machine at the First Cotton Mill in America. The display includes various (5) types of cotton fibres that were spun into yarn. The mill was located in Beverly, MA at the corner of Dodge and Cabot Streets. A historic marker is on the site. Four of the five examples of cotton have notes included with them. Example 1 says "This is some of the first cotton spun by machinery in this country. It was spun at the Beverly Cotton Mill before 1790. The Mill was located at the corner of Cabot and Dodge Street." Example 2 says, "Combed flax raised at the Honorable Joseph Philbricks. Weave ..... 1825." Another example simply says "Tow Yarn. 1825" |
