Bed, Four-poster |
Description |
A single mahogany bed with four turned and shaped posts. Each post has a pineapple carving topped with a ball. There is a shaped headboard. There were originally pegs along the side and end boards for rope webbing to support the mattress, but these were removed so a metal bed frame could be placed on top of the boards. The bed is slightly wider than a standard twin bed. This bed was originally the property of Daniel Kilham (1753-1841) who studied medicine in Newburyport. He roomed with John Quincy Adams (and is mentioned in Adams family correspondence). Daniel Kilham was the half brother of Captain Abraham Kilham of Beverly. |
