"Battle of Lake Champlain October 11-12 1776," by Carlton T. Chapman 1898. Vertical oil painting in black and white showing burning boat at shoreline. Chapman was born in New London, Ohio in 1860 and died in 1925. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in NYC. His specialty was marine landscapes and he also was a war correspondent and artist for Harper's Weekly during the Spanish-American War. The painting was commissioned, but not used as an illustration in Lodge's The Story of the Revolution. |
