Description |
"The Surrender of Burgoyne" was painted in 1898 by F. C. Yohn. Black, grey and white oil on canvas with a muted blue sky. Image depicts the surrender of General Sir John Burgoyne giving his sword to Major Horatio Gates at Saratoga, NY on October 17, 1777. The disarmed British soldiers passed between the American lines, which extended for nearly a mile. General Burgoyne, stepped to one side, drew his sword, in silence, handed it to General Gates, who, however, returned it. In 1898 Henry Cabot Lodge wrote "The Story of the Revolution;" this image is in Vol 1, page 259. Yohn made 35 other drawings for this book, for he specialized in military illustrations. He also worked for Scribners magazine and Colliers Weekly. |
