Description |
A Federal Period mahagony wine cabinet with burl veneer. It features two deep drawers, a bow fronted cupboard door, and is inset green marble top. The door and drawer fronts have ribbon edging and the top has a double setback. The ornate brass pulls probably date from the mid- nineteenth century, but are not original to the piece. The left bottle drawer has a "hidden" compartment below. The sliders have been replaced. The right drawer has grooves where compartment dividers are no longer there. The four legs are straight and on castors. This piece is somewhat transitional in style. The bulk of the body of the cabinet and the marble top are typical of Federal pieces, but the more delicate straight legs conform with an earlier Sheraton design. This is an unusual piece because most wine cabinets were much smaller, often about half the size of this piece. The size indicates that this was most likely a custom made piece for an individual of some wealth considering the costliness of the components, and the amount of fine wine it was designed to house. This was believed to have been owned by Captain Abraham Kilham (1765-1834) and used in the Cabot-Lee-Kilham house. |
