Description |
"Bonhomme Richard Defeats the Serapis" depicts the Battle of Flameborough Head in September 1779 and was painted by Carlton Theodore Chapman in 1898. Chapman was born in New London, Ohio in 1860 and died in 1925. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in NYC. He also served as war correspondent and artist for Harpers Weekly during the Spanish-American War. This painting was commissioned, but not used in Henry Cabot Lodge's book, "Story of the Revolution" Susan Day Parker donated the whole collection of paintings created for the book to the Beverly Historical Society and Museum in 1904. |
