Scope & Content |
1852 log of the Ship Australia on a voyage from New York to Hobart Town (now Hobart, Tasmania, Australia). It appears that the outward voyage took from 21 February - May 27th and then there is a gap and the voyage to Manila begins on August 26th, ending on November 7th at the end of the log. The first entry on the voyage to Manila reads: "At 11 am the pilot [?] took charge of the ship and proceeded down the river at 11-30. The two [?] Fred and Frank were released by the captain's orders on condition that they behave their selves [sic] for the future. Captain agreeing to pay their wages depending on police expenses incurred by them." There is a penciled notation on the inside front cover: "184 days at sea" and another two pages in: "Joined Ship Australia Monday Feb.10th 1852 as 2nd officer $20 a months; received in advance $40.00. The log was kept by John Edwin Abbot of Beverly. The log has several imprints of leaves and the last page of the book has pen & ink drawings of a soldier "Lifeguard", women in various costumes of the 19th century, one looks as if she may be a Native American, and another woman being chased by the devil with his pitchfork. These may be drawn by Mary Stimson Safford "alias Mrs. J. Edwin Abbot, Esq." She writes her name on the inside cover as well as the quote noted.
