Scope & Content |
1804 letter to Israel Thorndike & Samuel Page from a merchant (name unreadable) in Nantes, France. The writer says that Captain Jonathan Lovett sailed into Nantes and asked the letter writer's firm to dispose of the cargo, which chiefly belonged to Thorndike and Page. Capt Lovett became very ill, "raving mad" and was confined. Later he refused food and wanted to kill himself. The company and the doctor hoped that Lovett would recover, but he wasn't going to be able to act as captain on the voyage home and they procured the service of a Captain Logan. They sold the cargo of fish (some wasn't well salted and was damaged) and purchased wine to sell in the US, suggested also that the Captain get Cognac brandy at another port. They suggested that the market for coffee, sugar, indigo, cocoa, cochineal, cotton, ivory, mahogany, turtleshell, fish oil and rice was strong. |
