He informs her that his Regiment has been divided and he has been sent to Roanoke Island with 350 men on orders of Gen. Foster in anticipation of an enemy attack. He speaks of the 700 contrabands on the island and their welfare, asking if at all possible they could have some clothing sent for the women and children.
