It includes 205 ships, 46 barks, 360 brigs, 71 brigantines, 3 snows, 1 galliot, 179 schooners, 20 sloops and 44 schooners engaged in foreign commerce. Each of the vessels is listed by name, and tonnage, year is noted. The captain's name and where he is from is listed for some vessels. Inside the front cover is a list "new large vessels owned in Salem in 1879"

"The Attack on Quebec" by Frederick Coffay Yohn in 1898, which shows Benedict Arnold's unsuccessful attack on Quebec in Lower Canada on December 31, 1775. Oil painting in blacks and whites, horizontal, showing soldiers running in snow. The Second Division under Arnold, attacking.
